Counting my numberless fingers
Counting my Numberless Fingers has been performed over two hundred times by groups ranging from small ensembles of ten players, up to orchestras of 120.
It is written for young players or amateurs in flexible scoring. This means that it can be performed by almost any group of instruments (woodwind, brass or strings) plus piano and percussion. It is aimed at players of grade 5-8. The piece sounds impressively virtuosic, but is relatively straightforward to play.
It introduces students to a number of contemporary techniques of performance and composition in a practical manner. This includes freely repeating musical fragments, use of approximate pitch notation, and free multi-voice canon. It has also been used to teach composition in the classroom.
Counting my Numberless Fingers was runner-up for The British Composer of the Year Award.
'It has great drive and energy combined with reflective and quite dreamy passages' - BBC Radio 3
