In this wind quintet lively, rhythmic and energetic sections are contrasted by highly lyrical or anguished moments.
The form is based around a harmonic structure. In each section there is a focus on a different semitone dissonance, in an ascending sequence based on Messian’s Modes of Limited Modulation. After the climax at bar 68 the music gradually descends to the original harmonic area. The dissonance on both the micro level (semitone dissonance) and the macro level (the climax is a tritone away from the opening) drives the momentum of the rhythmic sections and helps build tension in the lyrical or anguished passages.
